Lân of Sytze Pruiksma on Governors Island  (10 - 20 sept 2009)A thrilling concert experience by one of The Netherlands’ most innovative composers, with the Manhattan skyline as backdrop.
Composer, musician, and birdwatcher, Sytze Pruiksma sees music in the landscape. He listens to nature like he listens to music. Using recorded natural sounds, musical instruments, the human voice, and entirely new instruments he’s designed, Pruiksma orchestrates a new kind of music.

Sytze PruiksmaComposer, musician and birdwatcher Sytze Pruiksma (1972) sees the landscape as a musical score. A long row of pegs is a rhythm. He listens to nature like he listens to music, a modulation. Birds sing and leaves rustle. When he sees a flock of birds flying over his head he hears a melody.

Sytze Pruiksma collects sounds, musical instruments and music. Real sounds recorded in nature, musical pieces that he composes. He creates samples and scores. He mixes and orchestrates. With traditional musical instruments, the human voice and new instruments he creates. With other musicians he finds sounds in their instruments that match the atmosphere he wants to create.
Pruiksma has developed his own method to create a new sound. Composition-stacks, repetitions, dynamics, rhythm and sounds prompted by the new instruments are the basics for this new music.

Joop Mulder (artistical director Oerol Festival, Terschelling): “Adventurer N. Scott Momaday wrote: “Once in his lifetime man should focus on the earth as he knows it, surrender to a certain landscape” Sytze Pruiksma surrenders to the landscape. He gives it a new colour and gives a new voice to plants and animals. We already knew about location theatre, but now we also have site specific music!”
